In Victoria, school education is normally 13 years of length. This is made up of :

  • Preparatory year ( not compulsory )
  • Primary School
  • Secondary School

Pre School Education

The period prior to formal schooling is known as preschool. It caters for children from the ages of three to five years old, providing a stimulating environment for children within a programme based on individual progression. Preschool is an extension of home, a place where children feel loved, accepted and secure, as well as being a place where children are able to grow and develop their abilities to their maximum potential. Attendance is optional, but parents are encouraged to enrol their children. The program usually consists of several half-day sessions, of the equivalent of full days.

Primary Education

Compulsory primary education in Australia begins at Year 1 and continues to Year 6 or Year 7. Primary schools emphasise on the importance of developing basic English language and literacy skills, numeracy and simple arithmetic, studies of society, health and creative activities. During the upper years of primary school there is further development of the skills learned in the earlier years and students study more advanced English, mathematics, social studies, health, technology and physical education.

Students are normally taught in smaller classes, which enable teachers to deliver dynamic, varied programme with attention given to the individual learning of each student. In primary school, there are no examination requirements for progress through the school.

There is no standardised examination at the end of primary school and no formal certificates are awarded. Once they have completed their primary school, students will normally be accepted into secondary school.
