As the name suggests, vocational courses are structured so that upon completion, students are equipped with the appropriate skills for the chosen occupation, trade or business. Providers of vocational education and training are closely linked to the industry, thereby applying subject material that is practical and skills-based. Vocational Education and Training is provided at Technical and Further Education Institutions (TAFE).
The increase in the number of overseas student enrolled in V.E.T. courses from 19,500 in 1994 to 30,800 in 2000 is testament to the rapid expansion and strengthening recognition of vocational education. Overseas students are attracted are attracted to its increasingly varied and comprehensive curriculum.
Each year, over 1.5 million students enrol into both vocational and non-vocational programs at TAFE. TAFE colleges offer a variety of course levels - including preparatory (pre-vocational), operator, trade, post-trade, technician and, in some fields, professional. Courses cover a diversity of disciplines - including agriculture, arts and humanities, building and construction, business administration, design, electrical trades, health services, land and marine resources, tourism and hospitality.
